I was about to turn 8 years old when the Mets won the 1969 World Series. The innocence of unlikely and exuberant joy refuses to die.

Thank goodness and Tom Seaver, Jerry Koosman, Clean Jones, Tommie Agee, Ed Charles, Nolan Ryan, Ed Kranepool, Ed Swoboda, Bud Harrelson, Jerry Grote, Gil Hodges and the rest of those joyful miracle makers.

I have seen you play softball. I also saw the early championship Mets at Shea. It was definitely a Long Island thing. The only time I was a Yankees fan was because of Red Sox fans at college. Also saw the Pittsfield Mets, but lost the cap I bought.

This essay really resonated with me. I too stepped right up to greet the Mets. I saw around five games at Shea in the sixties that my father took me to. Also the end of pickup games due to the highschool sports draft is exactly what happened. Your essay has rekindled my Mets spirit! Thank you.

I am not a Mets fan and never was. However, I was the editor of the original Meet the Mets video (in 1969?) that preceded every Mets game on channel 9 in NYC. Just goes to show how long we've (sort of) known each other despite not really knowing each other.

Very touching, Seth. I can relate to a lot of what you wrote, but I kind of abandoned them once they lost Kranepool (an original Met.) I can’t help thinking about a tiny joke in Mad magazine (probably pre-1969.) In one of the cartoons, there was someone holding a newspaper, and in the corner, apropos of nothing, the headline read: METS LOSE AGAIN!

Well done (clap clap)

I’m originally from Brooklyn before it was fashionable. When we moved to Long Island in the 50s, most of my friends’ families originated from the Bronx. Somehow, not being sports minded, I became a Yankees fan. Enjoyed your story!
