At the turn of the decade, just as they were breaking up, the Beatles still ruled the pop charts, with the Jackson 5, Badfinger, and Simon & Garfunkel filling out a mostly stellar week in music.
hey seth, i remember these songs and this time quite well and i am reminded that that was less than a month before the killings at kent state. music was everything then...
Frijid Pink's version was actually the first "House of the Rising Sun" I ever heard — but that was probably because I spent my childhood in Ann Arbor, and they were from right up the road in Detroit.
Interesting! I never knew Edison Lighthouse wasn't actually a band. And I like Frijid Pink's "House of the Rising Sun" more than The Animals' version. One other interesting cover of that is by Jerry Reed.
I remember some of these songs quite well. For example, I first heard (and sang) The House of the Rising Sun when I was in high school in the mid-50s. And obviously, I remember Let It Be. But the one that most affected me was Bridge Over Troubled Water. I knew it was a great song then, and I still think so every time I hear it.
Here's something that you may not remember. In 1970, Simon and Garfunkel had a one-hour special on CBS. I was standing in the control room of Reeves Sound Studios, watching as the two of them were transferring their film onto videotape for broadcast. The most indelibly striking and moving part of the program was Bridge Over Troubled Water, which was performed over footage of Bobby Kennedy's funeral train. I've never forgotten that moment, and I may still have a VHS tape of it somewhere. I had asked CBS to make a copy for me before I retired in 2009, and they were kind enough to do so. The last time I watched it, it was still a moving experience.

Seth, that was fun. I'd never heard -- or heard of -- the unknown two that you mentioned. But wow!

Bravo! Such good memories of such great tunes!

I would pick Radar Love, Spirit in the Sky, Thank You, All Right Now and Psychedelic Shack
